Summer Skincare Essentials

Summa, summa, summatime!! It’s the season to kick back, relax and unwind. We ditch our winter coats and layers in favour of lighter, more flowy apparel; your summer skincare routine is no different. Summer skincare essentials consists of less products than your winter skincare routine; the importance remains paramount.

The main things to consider with summer skincare are keeping the skin clean, hydrated and protected from the sun. If you use a heavier oil or cream face wash in the winter, consider using a foam cleanser in the summer. I use Consonant’s Gentle Foaming Cleanser all year round and that works great for my skin.  Finding dual purpose for products you already love and using products all year round is most economical of course, but it has to keep your skin happy.

Summer Skincare Must Haves

Keeping with the simplicity of summer skincare, let’s get into some products I have been using and some you might want to add to your summer skincare essentials list.

Moisturizer & HA

Consonant Skincare Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream
Consonant Face Cream

I’ve been using the Consonant Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream this summer and it’s doing a great job at keeping my skin moisturized.  It is a fragrance-free, lightweight all natural moisturizer, formulated with grapeseed and avocado oil. It is packaged in a delightful pump bottle and effectively moisturizes my face and neck with 2 pumps. The 50ml bottle retails at Sephora and at Consonant stores for $40.

Belif- The True Cream Aqua Bomb is a light weight gel-cream moisturizer that I plan on trying later on this summer. It is cool and light to touch, smells refreshing and packed with ceramides that help the skin retain water. There are 2 different sized containers of this moisturizer available at Sephora; the 50ml container retails for $50 and the 25 ml mini container retails for $27.

In speaking about moisture and hydration, I would be remiss if I didn’t quickly mention The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid + B5 serum(HA).  I use HA all year round, twice a day to help my skin lock in hydration. Head over to my blog piece on Establishing a Basic Skincare Routine for more information on serums and all other aspects of skincare. https://serajadebeautynlifestyle.com/2020/05/18/establishing-a-basic-skincare-routine/

SideNote: Hydration is necessary for all skin types; dry, oily, normal, combination, it does not matter. Hydrated skin wards off wrinkles, keeps the skin happy and working optimally.  Having and maintaining hydrated skin is more of a task during the dry winter months, but don’t be deceived by the nice, warmth and humidity of the summer months.  The skin’s hydration levels still need to be maintained; relate this to how parched you feel after a long hot summer day outside.  Do not skip this step, adjust your moisturizer to a lighter one if needed. I’ve listed a few but there is a plethora of summer moisturizers to choose from.

Refreshing Sprays & Toners

DIY Refreshing Mists/ Sprays – Aloe Vera Spray & Bioderma Toner

Refreshing sprays are great for keeping the skin refreshed, hydrated and calm. When you need a little pick me up on those long hot summer days, a quick spritz is sure to do the trick. My go to refreshing spray is really quite simple; it’s rose water and/ or aloe vera water in a spray bottle! Spritz the rose and/or aloe vera water on your skin to cool you down and enhance that dewy, sun kissed look and you’re set!

The Bioderma Moisturizing Toning Lotion, is a toner that I double  as a refreshing spray as well. I actually transfer it into a spray bottle for quick and efficient ease of use. It’s cool, refreshing and you cannot go wrong with finding new purposes for your products.  The 250 ml bottle of Bioderma’s Moisturizing Toning lotion  retails on Amazon.ca for $16.90 and is also sold at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Sunscreens & SPF Setting Sprays

You guys already know how I feel about sunscreen. Find a sunscreen that works for you

in the summer, if you want to switch it up. Be sure that it’s broad spectrum and SPF 30 or more. If you want to minimize the steps in your summer skincare routine, consider a moisturizer that has SPF already added to it.  I prefer to apply sunscreen separately to ensure it’s not watered down and I’m getting optimal protection for my skin, the choice however is yours.

My summer sunscreen is the same one I use all year round, the Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen.  To reinforce sun protection while wearing makeup throughout the day, I’ve been loving spritzing the Coola SPF 30 Makeup Setting Spray. I go into great detail about sun protection in my blog piece entitled Sunscreen Basic Protection. 1. Thank you for reminding me about the Coola Mist Spray! I’m hoping it helps to keep me protected while keeping my makeup in place as I have oil skin and this has been my challenge this summer. I used to use my winter moisturizer all year round but realize it’s just not cutting it this summer. I think you sold me on trying the ordinary line. Thanks for the great info and keep the tips coming!
